The Detroit Red Wings are off to a 5-4-3 start to the 2026-27 season. They are coming off a four-game road trip in which they secured five points out of a possible eight. Detroit averaged 3.3 goals per game while also allowing 3.3 goals per game during the trip.
Much of the offseason and the start of the season has revolved around Dylan Larkins trade request and Simon Edvinssons contract situation and subsequent trade request. However, amid all the noise, one Johan Franzen Jerseys forward is quietly putting together a solid start to the season. Michael Brandsegg-Nygrd is off to an under the radar start to the season and transforming his game even providing physicality to the Red Wings lineup.
Michael Brandsegg-Nygrd Off to Strong Start With Red Wings
To start the season, Brandsegg-Nygrd has recorded eight points on two goals and six assists while posting a plus-nine rating. He is currently on pace for a 50-plus-point season, a level of production few expected heading into the year.
However, his impact extends beyond the scoresheet. Brandsegg-Nygrd has recorded 54 hits this season, including 11 in Monday nights 4-3 shootout win over the Edmonton Oilers. That was the most hits by a Red Wings player in a single game since the statistic began being tracked in 2005-06.
He brings physicality to Detroits lineup, something the team has lacked outside of a few players. His combination of offensive production and physical play has made him an important piece early in the season.
Brandsegg-Nygrd Found His Game in AHL
Brandsegg-Nygrd got his first taste of the NHL Detroit Red Wings Jerseys last season when he made Detroits opening-night roster out of training camp. In nine games, he recorded one assist and finished with a minus-five rating.
He was recalled two other times throughout the season, appearing in five additional games and finishing that stretch even in plus/minus. Overall, he played 14 NHL games last season and recorded 43 hits. In just two fewer games this season, he has already recorded 11 more hits.
His offensive game took off after he was sent down to the Grand Rapids Griffins. Brandsegg-Nygrd finished last season in the AHL with 44 points, including 20 goals and 24 assists. He also posted a plus-17 rating, seven power-play goals, and eight game-winning goals.
He carried that production into the playoffs, recording eight points in eight games on four goals and four assists. That performance helped build momentum heading into the 2026-27 season.
A Bigger Role Could Help Brandsegg-Nygrds Calder Trophy Chances
Brandsegg-Nygrd is currently skating on the second line alongside Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond. He is also seeing time on Detroits second power-play unit alongside Michael Rasmussen, Andrew Copp, Emmitt Finnie, and Justin Faulk.
Playing alongside talented offensive players could help him continue producing throughout the season. Meanwhile, his physical presence gives Detroit another dimension that goes beyond scoring.
There is still a long way to go in the 2026-27 season, but Brandsegg-Nygrd is giving the Red Wings a reason to be excited. If he maintains his current pace and continues contributing in multiple areas, he could become a legitimate dark horse candidate for the Calder Memorial Trophy while establishing himself as an important part of Detroits future.
